The Manhattan district attorney’s office has announced plans to charge four men suspected of a 3AM BASE jump from the roof of 1 WTC on September 30th of last year.
This announcement is apparently the result of a six-month investigation, after two men wearing all black descended from the sky and landed in front of the Goldman Sachs building in the middle of the night, which triggered fears of some kind of nebulous terrorist threat. Fortunately, the only thing that has blown up in NYC since the police began their investigation has been the result of wilful neglect of infrastructure.
Marko Markovich, James Brady and Andrew Rossig, were charged with third-degree burglary (a Class D felony), second-degree reckless endangerment (a Class A misdemeanor), and jumping from a structure (another a Class A misdemeanor). Kyle Hartwell faces similar charges for his role as a lookout.
No charges have been announced for those who are ultimately responsible for the security breach: The NYPD and Port Authority Police.
This embarrassing news comes less than five days after reports of another trespassing incident, in which a teenager from New Jersey was able to bypass security at 1 WTC, climb the spire, and then… take some selfies.
After receiving news that their arrests were imminent, the parachuters decided to upload a couple POV helmet cam videos from the night of the jump, which showed up on YouTube yesterday. It begins with a view from the roof of the tower, where the first jumper (poised on the edge of a 1,335 foot drop) psychs himself up to jump for a couple very tense minutes.
Another first-person jump video shows an absolutely insane 10–11 seconds of free fall into the NYC skyline before pulling the chute.
Despite the fact that the men had kept the jump a secret for six months (and it was the district attorney’s office which finally released their names to the public), police and city officials have criticised the trio of experienced BASE jumpers as being selfish and self-glorifying; having put others in danger, and disrespecting the site… presumably before learning that one of the men who parachuted from the roof was a local Ironworker who helped build the tower. James Brady, can be seen here on the left installing the final steel column, signed by President Obama, Steelworkers and the NYPD in 2012.
This is presumably from the “topping out but not really topping out” ceremony when the final beam was placed on the roof of what has since been declared “the tallest building in the western hemisphere” despite being 115 feet shorter than the Sears Tower. Apparently the title of “tallest building” in America has changed hands for the first time in nearly 40 years as the result of some developers whining about not being able to count the 408 foot “spire” towards the building’s total height. ’Murica.
Despite growing concerns about security at the site, at the time of publication there has been no specific word from officials on how they intend to reduce the potential risk to this monumental priapism for American capitalism.
UPDATE: 2014–03–25 23:41
CNN reporters, presumably attempting to further embarrass the NYPD, have embarrassed themselves by getting arrested while trying to gain illegal access 1 WTC today, during week in which there have been TWO high profile stories about trespassing there. The duo apparently tried to climb the fence in broad daylight, at 2pm, in lower Manhattan, on a mother fucking week day. When that didn’t work, they attempted to walk right up to security and push their way past them. This turned out to be a poor choice of tactics, and the pair was then promptly arrested.
