It's spring time in Amsterdam, which means that (in addition to a gnarly infestation of tulips) it's time to kick-off this year's techno festivals. The Awakenings Easter Special, a weekend long prelude to this summer's Awakenings Festival, happened last weekend at the Gashouder. Which, if your're not familiar, is a giant fucking industrial depot with a domed roof full of lazers and smoke machines and enough audio output to shake dust from the rafters on the other side of the North Sea.
Spanning three days, highlight bookings of this years Easter Special included Adam Beyer, Speedy J, Gary Beck, Blawan and Carl Cox. The full lineup is listed below, along with a collection of SoundCloud mixes and YouTube videos recorded at the party. For more info, event details, photos and other media from the Awakenings Easter Special, check the event links below.
Home work opened, but there's no recording available.
Jooris Vroon has a surprisingly fun mix comprised mostly of funky / bangin / tribal techno tracks.
Jon Rundell' was house-y and delicious.
What begins as a mix of funky, sparse techno shudders it's way through a block of house flavored basslines before launching full speed into an intense salvo of deep, dark and heavy techno for the second half of the set, and winds down into some seriously swank shit to wrap up the hour.
Adam Beyer delivers an epic two and a half hour mix of spectral, throw-your-hands-up-in-the-air type rhythms that creep into a darker and heavier soundscape and spiral out into a storm of uptemp kickdrums and shredding basslines before getting really space age towards the end.
It's also probably the best showcase of what has been widely described as the world's worst MC, even by people who are fans of crazy people who do a ton of drugs and then get on stage and yell at the audience.
Speedy J & Gary Beck
Maybe the biggest disappointment is that there doesn't seem to be any audio or video record of Speedy J and Gary Beck at this year's easter special, so here's a couple recordings of them from previous Awakenings events.
The Awakenings Festival is a yearly even that takes place in Amsterdam. Rather than a typical festival spanning a week or weekend, the Awakenings Festival packs an incredible amount of techno into one location for a 12-hour festival. This year's Awakenings Festival main even is taking place on June 29th in Amersterdam. Confirmed acts include Alan Fitzpatrick, Trentemøller, Adam Beyer, Modeselektor, DJ Rush, Speedy J, Carl Cox, Jeff Mills, Ben Sims, Len Faki, Robert Natus, Viper XXL, Pet Duo, Green Velvet, Blawan, Arkus P and that's about a quarter of the line-up. So, if anyone's interested in helping me get there, I've got a couple of kindneys I'm looking to sell.
